Overwhelmed… and Held

Life can feel like too much sometimes.

Not in a dramatic, poetic way. But in the very real, very tangible sense of too many needs, too many responsibilities, and not enough of you to go around. The kind of overwhelm that settles into your bones. The kind that meets you before your feet even hit the floor in the morning.

I know that feeling firsthand.

For the past three months, I’ve been solo parenting while my husband has been away at military training. That’s meant caring for four kids - each with their own needs, emotions, schedules, and personalities - while also helping care for two aging parents under our roof. Every day has been a constant balancing act. Meals, messes, appointments, emotions, exhaustion. The kind of days where you pour out everything you have… and then realize there’s still more required of you.

There have been moments I’ve felt stretched so thin I didn’t recognize myself. Moments where the noise, the needs, and the pressure felt like they might swallow me whole. Moments where I’ve whispered, How can I keep going like this?

Maybe you’ve felt that too.

Maybe your overwhelm looks different - work stress, financial pressure, health struggles, relationships, or simply the weight of daily life - but the feeling is the same. Like you’re carrying more than you were ever meant to hold.

And the truth is… you are.

We were never meant to carry it all on our own.

Scripture reminds us of this so clearly: “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” (1 Peter 5:7 NLT). Not some of it. Not the manageable pieces. All of it.

There’s something both humbling and freeing about reaching the end of yourself. Because it’s there, right at that breaking point, that you’re reminded of a deeper truth: God never asked you to be enough on your own.

In the middle of the chaos, the exhaustion, and the constant demands, there is an invitation. Not to try harder. Not to hold it together better. But to come to Him.

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28 NLT).

To lean.

To rest.

To surrender.

And here’s what I’ve been learning in this season, something I didn’t fully understand before:

There is another kind of overwhelming.

God is overwhelming too… but in the most beautiful, sustaining way.

His love is overwhelming.
“And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.” (Ephesians 3:18 NLT).

His peace is overwhelming.
“Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7 NLT).

His strength is overwhelming.
“Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9 NLT).

When life feels like too much, God meets you with more - more peace, more grace, more strength than you could ever produce on your own. Where the world overwhelms you with pressure, God overwhelms you with presence.

There have been days in this season where the only prayer I could manage was, “Lord, help me.” And somehow, that was enough. Strength came. Patience came. Peace, quiet, steady peace, found its way in.

Not because everything got easier.

But because I wasn’t facing it alone anymore.

Isaiah 26:3 (NLT) says, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” Not perfect circumstances - perfect peace. Right in the middle of real life.

If you’re in a season that feels overwhelming, you don’t have to power through it by yourself. You don’t have to pretend you’re okay. You don’t have to carry what was never yours to hold.

You can lay it down.

You can breathe.

You can trust.

Because the same God who calls you into hard seasons also sustains you through them. And when everything else feels overwhelming in the heaviest way…

He overwhelms you in the holiest one.

Even here.
Even now.
Especially now.

Heavenly Father,

You see the weight each person reading this is carrying, and we give it all to You. When we feel overwhelmed, remind us we don’t have to do this alone.

Fill us with Your peace, steady our hearts, and be our strength in every moment. Help us to rest in You, even in the chaos, and trust that You will sustain us.

Thank You for always being near.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
