Am I Too Young?

As I was reading my Bible the other morning, I came across these verses. They’re verses I’ve read before. But this time they stood out to me…

“O Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I can’t speak for you! I’m too young!” The Lord replied, “Don’t say, ‘I’m too young,’ for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you. And don’t be afraid of people, for I will be with you and protect you. I, the Lord, have spoken!”
- Jeremiah 1:6–8 NLT

“I’m too young.”
“I’m not ready.”
“I don’t know enough yet.”

These words didn’t come from someone unsure if God was real; they came from a prophet chosen by God Himself. Jeremiah wasn’t denying God’s voice; he was doubting his own ability. And God’s response wasn’t to wait until Jeremiah felt confident. It was to remind him of who was with him.

God’s Call Is Not Age-Restricted

God never tells Jeremiah to come back when he’s older, wiser, or more experienced. Instead, He says, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’” God shuts down the excuse immediately. Not because Jeremiah’s fear wasn’t real, but because age has never been a requirement for obedience.

If you are breathing, listening, and willing, God can use you-right now.

God Calls the Young

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly calls people long before they feel “ready”:

  • David was a teenager when he was anointed king and faced Goliath while trained soldiers stood back.

  • Samuel was a child when he first heard the voice of the Lord calling him by name.

  • Mary was likely a young teenager when God entrusted her with carrying the Savior of the world.

  • Timothy was young when Paul encouraged him not to let anyone look down on him because of his age, but to lead by example.

God has never waited for perfect résumés. He looks for willing hearts.

God Also Calls the Old

At the same time, Scripture shows us that God is never finished with someone simply because of their age:

  • Abraham was well advanced in years when God promised to make him the father of many nations.

  • Moses was around 80 years old when God called him to lead Israel out of Egypt.

  • Sarah laughed at the idea of God’s promise because of her age…until God proved His faithfulness.

The message is clear: God doesn’t call based on age. He calls based on purpose.

Fear Doesn’t Disqualify You—Disobedience Does

God doesn’t tell Jeremiah he won’t be afraid. Instead, He promises His presence: “Do not be afraid… for I am with you.”Courage doesn’t mean the absence of fear; it means choosing obedience despite it.

You don’t need to have everything figured out. You don’t need a platform, a microphone, or a following. You need a yes.

God already knows where He is sending you. Your job is to trust Him enough to take the next step.

If you feel like the Lord is calling you, make sure you’re actively seeking Him and spending time with Him. You can’t follow His instructions if you’re not constantly communicating with Him.

This Generation Is Not “The Church of Tomorrow”

You are the Church right now.

God is calling students, young adults, creatives, leaders, parents, and professionals to live boldly for Him in this generation-not someday, but today. Your obedience may look like speaking up, serving faithfully, choosing purity, loving boldly, or stepping into leadership before you feel ready.

Whatever God has placed on your heart is not an accident.

Step Into the Calling

If God is stirring something in you don’t silence it with excuses. Don’t wait until you feel qualified. The same God who called Jeremiah is the same God calling you. And His promise still stands:

“Do not be afraid… for I am with you.”

Say yes. Step forward. Trust Him with the rest.

God, thank You for calling us-right where we are, not where we think we should be. Forgive us for the times we’ve allowed fear, insecurity, or age to silence what You’ve placed on our hearts. Help us to trust that if You are calling us, You will also equip us.

Give us courage to step forward in obedience, even when we feel unprepared or afraid. Teach us to listen for Your voice and to say yes, even when the path feels unclear. Remind us that we are never alone, because You go with us and before us.

Use our lives for Your glory. Shape this generation to be bold in faith, rooted in truth, and unashamed of the call You’ve placed on us.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
